Hans Kohn has lived where history has been made. Born in Prague in 1891, he was raised in the twilight of the Habsburg Empire, saw action in World War I, and spent five years in Russia as a prisoner of war. He came to America in 1933, after more than a decade of living in London, Paris, and Jerusalem. The next 27 years he spent as professor of history at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts and at the city college of new York.
