NYS Practice Tests

Our permit practice tests have 20 random questions taken from the information in the New York Driver’s Manual and real DMV tests. After each question, you get instant feedback. You’ll see if your answer is correct or not. Should you make a mistake there is also a brief explanation. Use it to look up more information in the Driver’s Manual.

Always make sure you have the latest version of the New York Driver’s Manual and that you read it.

After studying the manual, you should take as many practice tests as possible to check your progress and level of readiness.

The passing score in New York is 70 percent, which means you must correctly answer at least 14 questions of the 20 questions. You can, in other words, miss 6 of the questions.

But always aim a little higher when practicing. Keep at it until you reach a score of at least 92 percent (a full score is preferable). You should also make sure that you understand both questions and answers.

Trying to just memorize answers and hope that you will get the same question on the exam is a risky study tactic.

Who Must Pass the New York Knowledge Exam?

As a first-time applicant, you must always pass a written knowledge test and pay application and license fees. You must also pass the vision test. Most drivers must also complete an approved 5-hour classroom training course and pass the road test.

If you are a new resident with a valid license issued by another U.S. state, territory or possession, or a Canadian province or territory, you must pass the vision test, but the knowledge test, safe driving course, and road test are usually waived.

This doesn’t apply if your out-of-state license has been valid for less than six months or expired more than one year ago. Then, you take both the written knowledge test and the road test.

You must also complete the safe driving course.

If you are transferring a license from a foreign country other than Canada, you must pass the vision test, complete the safe driving course, and you must pass a written knowledge test and road test. New York State also requires that you turn in your foreign driver’s license, which is usually destroyed.

Your New York license may be renewed up to one year after the expiration date. After one year, you must reapply for a new license and pass all necessary exams.

New York State DMV Knowledge Test

The NY DMV written test checks your knowledge of the rules of the road, safe driving techniques, road signs and their meanings, and the laws about the use of alcohol and drugs while driving. The test has 20 questions and you must correctly answer 14 questions to pass (A passing score of 70%).

Four questions will be asked about road signs and their meanings, two of which must be correctly answered.

While New York State doesn’t release any data on passing rates, NYS is commonly considered as an easy state for passing the written knowledge test. Older data shows that only 1 out of 5 fail their first attempt. Of those, a large portion studied less than 10 hours for the test. You can easily beat the statistics by just studying a little bit more and take several permit practice tests here at driversprep.com. Our survey in 2014 showed that 100% of our users in New York passed.

Directions: The New York permit test is a significant part of the NY licensing process. Review your New York Driver Handbook thoroughly as the questions on the permit test are based on information in this handbook. You can find the most recent NY Driver’s Manual at your local DMV office or online at the official NY DMV website. You do not need to complete a driver’s education course in order to be eligible for a NY permit, but you are required to complete a driver’s education course or a pre-licensing class before you take the required road test.

Don’t cram the night before your permit test. Get a good night’s rest. On test day, remember to bring with you a completed form MV-44, your social security card, application fee and documents that prove your age and identity. The NY permit test consists of 20 questions, 4 of which will be about road signs. You will need to answer correctly 14 of the 20 questions, and at least 2 of those road signs questions.
